Yesterday, Rockstar released the reveal trailer for their new game, Grand Theft Auto V, or 5 for the roman numeral impaired. It showed random locations from the new game, and had a very basic voice over from someone giving a very vague description of what might be the story.
So, of course, most of the people I saw on the internet yesterday shit on it. For an 84 second reveal trailer that didn’t actually show anything. I saw everything from “meh” to “generic” to “doesn’t do anything for me” to “too serious.” And it made me question just what the fuck is wrong with you people.
Seriously, a trailer that shows the very basic gist of “here’s a new GTA” comes out and automatically if it doesn’t have a nuclear explosion, a super powered hero, or the protagonist farting on someone, it’s dumb. If it’s not full of explosions and shooting and lens flare, it’s dull. If it’s not running on Frostbite 2, or the Crysis engine, it’s outdated. If it doesn’t reveal its full story, it’s not worth the time to figure out. If it doesn’t “wow” you right out of the gate, it’s not worth the time it took to watch the trailer. If the trailer doesn’t start with a deep throated voice saying “In a world…” than they’re obviously doing it wrong.
No offense, but what the fuck is wrong with you people? When did it get so commonplace to just assume, off of a 84 second teaser trailer, that a game has nothing to offer? When, exactly, did you lose your sense of openness and willingness to give something more than a minute of your time to see if it’s worth it or not? When did you grow up to be so fucking cynical and jaded?
I’m not saying “grow up” as if it’s a bad thing. One thing that I’ve loved about this console cycle is that Rockstar games are developing games with actual stories that don’t have a bunch of dick and fart jokes in them, that are deeper and grittier and that connect me with the characters more than the usual run of the mill sandbox games. After a good attempt with GTA IV and a great success with RDR, I can’t wait to see what they come up with with GTA V and see how far Rockstar has come along with the interactive story telling that they are getting to be known for.
But no, an 84 second trailer that doesn’t reveal much more than location and engine doesn’t “do it” for you. What, do developers need to put fucking clown shoes on everything now to make it “interesting,” to make it “worth your time?”
I’m not a Rockstar apologist, or trying to stand up for them, or anything like that, it’s just that I am getting sick and tired of people not giving games ten fucking seconds before announcing that “A” game must be better than “B” game, neither of which has come out, because “A” game has a better trailer, even though “B” game was just announced. Wait a goddamn minute and give things a chance to develop before you write them off.
does this mean your getting gta5 cause i sure as hell will be.
I agree with this whole thing. People are too focused on “spectacle”. Just because the trailer was clean and classy...
Oh blehmeng, you so blehmeng! But seriously, I honestly was floored by the trailer. There’s some amazingly good stuff...
